Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the Board of Pensions serve more than just churches?

We do provide benefits to minister and staff employed by PC(USA) churches, but we also support a wide range of organizations affiliated with the PC(USA), including camps and conference centers, and have for more than 25 years. We offer a range of plans and options to meet the specific needs of these organizations.

Q: What makes the Board of Pensions different from a traditional employee benefits provider?

We offer several advantages compared to traditional benefits providers.

The Board of Pensions, as a church plan, is a member of the Church Benefits Association, which includes more than 50 denominational benefits plans. Because many of these plans offer healthcare coverage, we participate in purchasing coalitions with other denominations, where possible, which enables us to negotiate more advantageous pricing for different types of benefits, such as medical and prescription drugs.

As a self-funded plan, the Board of Pensions bears the full financial risk for healthcare claims and related administrative costs. While we engage with vendors to administer medical claims and pharmacy benefits, the payments themselves come entirely from Board funds — funds generated through employer dues. We are a fiduciary who acts in the best interests of our members.

As a nonprofit, we don’t charge fees and commissions that are often associated with other insurance brokers and consultants.
